Ever changing Gay Landscape in Hong Kong - a BAR-rometer readingIn the two years I have been in Hong Kong, I have watched the gay community change a great deal. With just a few gay bars and events when I got here, to Floatilla, and the opening of several new bars, Hong Kong's gay scene had a tremendous growth spurt. We have in the last 6 months or so had a bit of a shrinkage. Gmagazine is no longer with us. Bliss closed down a while back. And the tremendously popular Meilanfang is not open anymore. Someone recently told me Rice bar is closing too! (Is that true Johnny?) Maybe it is just the natural pattern of rise and fall... or maybe it is an indicator of a climate change in the way we are gay in HK. Anyway, we still have many of the staples of gay life here... Works, Propaganda are still going strong and show no signs of stopping. We have our lovely happy hour at Club 97 in Lan Kwai Fong on Friday nights. And we have Volume, which continues to make an effort to do specially themed nights to keep us entertained. True, the gay community is not limited to the bar scene. But maybe we can get a reading on where we are at by looking at the trends in our drinking and socializing culture. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. In the meantime, I will continue to keep this page updated (I know, I took a bit of time off over the hollidays!) and hope you continue to find it useful, informative, and entertaining. Lots of love, Antonio |
